About the event
The Australian Bluewater Freediving Classic is an annual spearfishing competition held in Coffs Harbour, organised by the Coffs Harbour Bluewater Freedivers Club. The 2025 event has been delayed due to Cyclone Alfred and is now scheduled for the weekend of April 5 and 6, with registration and briefing taking place on April 4 at the Woolgoolga C.ex Club.
Participants will explore a coastal stretch spanning 300 km, from Evans Head in the north to South West Rocks in the south. The competition focuses on targeting fast-growing pelagic species that are not territorial, promoting sustainable fishing practices. Each diver is limited to weighing in a maximum of five fish, encouraging responsible spearfishing.
Diving activities begin early on both days, with sign-on and sign-off procedures ensuring safety and coordination. Weigh-ins take place at the Woolgoolga Beach Reserve, accompanied by a BBQ and fish auction, with proceeds supporting the Woolgoolga Volunteer Marine Rescue.
